Toothache sometimes may be a symptom of sinus, external and inner infection, angina and heart attack. Scaling or removal of plaque deposits, tooth splinting, tooth extraction, dental filling and root canalling procedures are various treatments to combat toothache. Some people also can take analgesics like acetaminophen and ibuprofen to counter toothache.

Toothache is often accompanied by swelling of gums, discharge or bleeding from gums, redness along the gum line and bad breath. Often the ache may radiate from tooth to cheek, jaws and ears. The pain can be excruciating and seemingly everlasting, but thankfully there are a number of natural toothache treatments that do not involve a visit to the dentist.

We present you popular and proven remedies, made from natural ingredients found in most homes that may improve the pain level of a toothache and are effective enough to take a closer look at them.

Below are some effective home remedies for toothache that may also help to treat tooth abscess and tooth infection.

  1. Garlic

Garlic is one of the most popular home remedies for toothache, being used for years, and namely since 3000 B.C., to treat a toothache. You need to know that garlic contains a powerful compound called allicin, which gives to garlic its antibiotic properties. Allicin, the same stuff that gives you garlic breath, is responsible for garlic’s antifungal, antiviral, and antibacterial properties. The same agent in garlic can also help fight gum disease. There are more than 500 different species of bacteria that naturally reside in your mouth and some of these bacteria are beneficial to health and others are not. Thus you need to keep your mouth healthy and keep the good and bad bacteria in balance. Allicin prevents the bad bacteria that cause tooth decay from proliferating in your mouth.

When garlic is crushed, this antibiotic compound is released and helps to slow bacterial activity upon application and ingestion.

Thus how to reap the benefits of garlic?

Try applying crushed garlic clove or garlic powder to the sore area. It may burn, but the pain could vanish within minutes. Repeat this over a few days, and you will get well.

You can either take garlic as a supplement along with your vitamins. Also, you can make garlic a regular part of your cooking and allicin contained in it will boost your body’s immune system.

  1. Turmeric

Turmeric is a famous curry spice that is used generously by Asians in their food as well as a medicine. Curcuminoids, found in turmeric powder, are strong antioxidants and they are responsible for the bright yellow color of the spice. Curcumin is the main curcuminoid that demonstrates the pharmacological properties of turmeric.

That is why turmeric is often used to provide respite from cavity pain. It has antibacterial, antioxidant, anticancer, antimicrobial, as well as anti-inflammatory properties that help keep the gums healthy and prevent tooth decay due to bacterial infection. Many research studies suggest that these properties can be of use in dental problems and diseases related to the mouth.

In other words, turmeric is an antibiotic that has anti-inflammatory properties used to treat pain and inflammation.

One of the remedies that could alleviate your pain is to apply some turmeric powder on the affected teeth. Leave it on for a few minutes and then rinse well with warm water.

Also, you can mix a teaspoon of turmeric and water to make a paste. Clean your mouth thoroughly. Apply to the affected area using your fingers or a cotton ball. Repeat regularly this procedure.

Or you can mix 1/2 teaspoon of turmeric and a teaspoon of salt to a glass of warm water. Rinse your mouth with the solution and repeat it regularly.

Another option is to mix 1/2 teaspoon of turmeric powder with a little of mustard oil and use it to massage your teeth and gums. Leave it on for 10 minutes and then spit it out.

Repeat either of these remedies once or twice daily for at least a few days.

  1. Indian Lilac

Indian lilac, also known as neem, is another popular remedy for treating cavities. Also, Indian lilac leaves and the oil contained in them are very useful for treating the problem of cavities. This amazing plant has antibacterial and antiseptic nature and helps in getting rid of bacterial infection very effectively. Plus, it helps maintain healthy and strong teeth and gums. On the other hand, the anti-inflammatory properties provide relief from the pain.

Thus how to use this remedy? Rub the juice of neem leaves on affected areas in your mouth. You can rub the juice of neem leaves both on the teeth and gums. Leave it on for a few minutes and then rinse it off with warm water. For effective results follow this treatment once or twice daily.

You can also use soft neem sticks to brush your teeth and, as a curiosity for you, there is toothpaste containing neem oil which is very useful for oral health.

  1. Clove

Clove is used to treat cavities and other dental problems. Clove has anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory properties that helps eliminate toothaches and cavities.

Clove oil is also useful for tooth problems and has anti-fungal, antiseptic, bactericidal, and analgesic properties that kill infection and treat toothaches and other gum problems. It is important to know that it contains antioxidants and nutrients like manganese, omega-3s, and fiber which relieve pain and reduce inflammation, eliminating infection.

Thus how to use clove remedy? For instance, you can gently chew a clove and keep it on one side in your mouth, in the affected area, between your teeth, for some minutes. The clove juice that is extracted from the clove in your mouth will heal the cavity and reduce the pain. Alternately, you can place clove powder in a teabag and place it between infected area and cheek for 30 minutes, or mix hydrogen peroxide and clove oil and apply to the infected area with a cotton ball.

Also, you can mix ¼ teaspoon of sesame seed oil with 2-3 drops of clove oil. You need just to dip a small cotton ball in the solution and apply it on the affected tooth. Do this daily before sleeping.

According to another recipe, mix ¼ teaspoon of olive oil and 2 – 3 drops of pure clove oil. Dip a cotton ball in the juice and place between the infected area and cheek. Leave for as long as possible, but be careful not to sleep with it in your mouth. Repeat regularly the procedure.

  1. Salt

Many people get rid of toothaches, even involving severe, intense or excruciating pain, just using simple salt. This simple procedure for toothache relief has indeed worked miracles for many patients.

How to do the salt water rinse?

Dissolve enough salt in cold or lukewarm water to make a strong solution. Add ½ a teaspoon of salt to a cup of warm water. If you want to take it slowly, begin with a weak solution. Rinse your mouth repeatedly, swishing the salty water around your mouth, if the pain allows or just allowing the brine to work in your mouth. The dental pain, especially when is extremely severe, may instantly subside or perhaps take a while before it goes away. Repeat the salt rinse even for several days in case the pain reoccurs or does not fully go away. You also can lodge some salt crystals directly against the tooth or gum area that hurts. For best results, do not rinse with water afterwards.

The use of salt also promotes healing, so it is ideal to use it 24 hours after minor dental surgery to help your mouth recover.

  1. Oil pulling

Oil pulling is an ancient Ayurvedic, very old, remedy that uses natural substances to clean and detoxify teeth and gums. Also, it has the effect of whitening teeth naturally and it is beneficial in improving gums and removing harmful bacteria.

The process of oil swishing in the mouth for a short time each day will help you to improve oral health, being able to cut through plaque and remove toxins without disturbing the teeth or gums.

When the oil pulling is performed, the oils, especially oils with natural antibacterial properties, bind to the biofilm, or plaque, on the teeth and reduce the number of bacteria in the mouth. Oil pulling has been shown to reduce the number of Streptococcus mutans bacteria in the mouth, especially when done with coconut oil.

Traditional cultures use sesame or sunflower oil for oil pulling, but we recommend to use coconut oil for several reasons. First of all, because it is rich in medium chain triglycerides and high in lauric acid. Secondly, because it is a bacteria killer.

To use coconut oil you need to put 1-2 teaspoons of coconut oil into the mouth. I also pour a few drops of Essential Oil into the mix. Swish for 20 minutes. Spit oil into the trash can.  Rinse well with warm water. Warm water seems to clean the mouth better.

  1. Mustard Oil:

Mustard oil has high levels of both alpha-linolenic acid and erucic acid. Because of this, mustard oil has numerous medicinal properties. It is especially beneficial to treat different types of aches and pains.

To make the remedy, you need rock salt and mustard oil. Take rock salt and crush it to make a thin powder. After, filter it using a clean cloth to remove any thick piece. You need to take 2 grams of this filtered rock salt and mix with 8 drops of mustard oil in it. Use this mixture to massage your teeth and gums softly every night before going to sleep. If during massage you feel small bleeding, then do not worry about that because this is a normal process. After you finish the massage, do gargle with lukewarm water. Follow this process for 10 days. It will stop teeth pain after eating something hot or cold, makes your teeth stronger and white, protects from germs and cavities, stops gum swelling and bleeding.

Also, you can mix mustard oil and turmeric oil. Both mustard and turmeric contain antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties and they help in reducing pain and killing germs and bacteria, which cause tooth infection.

Thus you need to take 1 tsp of mustard oil and warm it for 10 seconds in a microwave oven. After, add ½ tsp of turmeric powder to it and mix well. Apply this paste to your wisdom tooth or the other infected tooth. Leave it for 5 minutes and then wash your mouth. Use this remedy to get relief from the aching tooth.

  1. Nutmeg

Nutmeg is a very fragrant medicinal spice that has been used therapeutically for thousands of years. Nutmeg is rich in antioxidants and vitamin C, folic acid, riboflavin, and beta carotene. It is also an excellent source of minerals such as copper, calcium, iron, zinc, and magnesium. Nutmeg contains anti-depressant, anti-fungal, and digestive properties that are highly beneficial for the neurological, cognitive, immune and digestive systems.

Nutmeg has many health benefits, but maybe you didn’t know that it is also beneficial for dental health. Nutmeg is loaded with trace minerals and is an excellent pain reliever.

Using nutmeg for dental health is beneficial for helping to eliminate bad breath, protecting teeth and gums, helping to relieve tooth pain and assisting to keep gums and teeth in better health. It also has amazing trace minerals, like manganese, potassium, iron and calcium, which are essential in strengthening the immune system. These trace minerals are great immune system strengtheners that keep gums and teeth in better dental health.

The eugenol oil derived from the nutmeg spice has pain relieving properties and is very helpful in relieving toothache pain.

To use nutmeg as a remedy for oral health you need to mix half a teaspoon of nutmeg powder with one teaspoon of mustard, sesame oil or coconut oil. Apply the mixture on the affected tooth using cotton wool and leave it on for 25 minutes. Then wash your mouth with warm water. Repeat this procedure every two days.

  1. Sesame oil

One of the most important benefits of sesame seeds and sesame oil revolves around removing dental plaque and boosting oral health.

Sesame oil is able to significantly reduce bacteria counts, reduce inflammation and plaque among the subjects, at least as good, if not better, than chlorhexidine. Like coconut oil, sesame oil is also a good antiseptic and kills Streptococcus mutans and other dental decay producing bacteria. Another  significant result is that sesame oil, the primary oil recommended in thousands of years of Ayurvedic practice to do both oil pulling and oil massage, beats chlorhexidine in all four measures – bacteria reduction of two types, reduction of plaque and the reduction of signs of gingivitis.

Thus you can use sesame oil not just for oil puling, but also to massage your teeth and gums. By engaging in an activity known as oil pulling, which involves swishing oil around in your mouth, you can boost oral health and even whiten your teeth.

To use sesame oil remedy you need to put 2 teaspoons of sesame oil into the mouth. Swish for 20 minutes and spit oil into the trash can.  Rinse well with warm water.

Also, you can dip a cotton ball in sesame oil and place between the infected area and cheek. Leave it for 25 minutes and after rinse with warm water. Repeat regularly as needed.
